Summary Of Our Agenda

MCRA 2017 started Monday evening with an opening reception on the beautiful Bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the Bacara Resort & Spa.

“Excellent location, and the committee does an amazing job of organizing. Wonderful event!”

After breakfast Tuesday morning, we started with our keynote speaker, Rich Neureuther, a retired FBI Special Agent. He shared with us the everyday techniques to get at the truth and know if people are lying to you.

“I enjoy the keynote speaker being off-topic. Of course we can talk about health care and its issues all day long, but it’s nice to take a break from it! Great start to the conference.”

Sarah Thomas, Managing Director of Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, spoke on federal policy and state policy as it relates to Medicaid and the individual market.

“This was a very good conference and on topic.”

Brett Graham, Chief Strategy Officer with Leavitt Partners, returned to MCRA to update us on the state of risk in health care. We learned more on who is bearing this risk and how prepared they are to manage this risk.

Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch together on the Ocean Terrace, served by the Bacara Resort.

The afternoon started with Dr. Stacy Borans of Advanced Medical Strategies. Dr. Borans spoke on the trends seen with high-cost pharmaceuticals. For those working in the health care space back in 1990, we saw 10 specialty drugs. By 2015, that number jumped to 300 specialty drugs. Currently under development are 700 specialty drugs!

“2017 conference had the best line-up yet.”

Our Tuesday meeting wrapped up with Kevin Dotson, Director of Actuarial Consulting with Optum. Kevin spoke on the next iteration of value-based care, including how to prepare for MACRA and sort through the many quality metrics and risk/reward variables.

“This is by far the best conference I attend all year.”

Tuesday late afternoon was spent at our beach party overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A big thank you to our Gold Sponsors for this event! We enjoyed drinks, appetizers and live music thanks to musician Christopher Wooley.

For some of us with a little energy left, we met by the pool bar for a lovely evening of sitting around the fire pit, s’mores and fun conversation under the stars. Thanks to our Silver Sponsors for hosting this nice event!

“Best conference I have attended in years, including prior MCRAs. Great job, board and speakers!”

Back by popular demand, Wednesday morning started with a panel discussion on the evolution of health care and its impact on reinsurance. The panel included our moderator Tasha Barbour of PartnerRe. Joining her was Tom Sass of Aon Benfield, Todd Watson of PartnerRe, Steve Murphy of Northshore International Insurance Services, and Debbie Hoffer of SummitRe. As in the past, the panel was well received in that it allowed the opportunity to share ideas and experiences among folks in our industry.

“Great work. I appreciate the simplicity of the event. It is not hectic and all of it flows very well. I can only believe this is due to a great planning committee.”

We wrapped up our conference by hearing from Mark Peterson, Professor of Public Policy, Political Science and Law at UCLA. Though all Americans have many unanswered questions as to where things will go with the ACA, Mr. Peterson filled us in on the latest, yet ever-changing, news for Obamacare and the GOP including where things seem to be with the “repeal and replace” approach.

“Speakers were top notch. I’ve been to many MCRA conferences, and this was one of the best. Thanks!!”

A BIG Thanks To Our 2017 Board Members!

“Appreciate all the hard work the board contributes every year to deliver a high quality and educational experience.”
