We kicked off our conference with our well-received Monday evening reception, which was held at the beautiful Royal Palms Resort and Spa in Phoenix.

Tuesday morning was a hit with attendees. Sgt. Matt Eversmann, who was immortalized in the epic film Black Hawk Down, shared his heroic account of a group of elite US soldiers sent into Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993 as part of a UN peacekeeping operation. Eversmann’s courage and patriotism are unmatched – very inspirational to hear his story! He wrapped up by signing his book and shaking hands with every conference participant.

Angela Ratts, family nurse practitioner and program coordinator at Arizona Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center, shared valuable information on hemophilia– causes, treatment, and controlling costs through prevention, monitoring, and education. We also learned the value of accessing Federally designated Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTC) and 340B Programs. To find an HTC, visit www.hemophilia.org.
Mike Ferguson, Chief Operating Officer of the Self-Insurance Institute of America, Inc. (SIIA), gave us his perspective plus many known facts of the federal health care reform. Though much of the discussion was focused on the self-funded market, Mike’s message was definitely worthwhile with the upcoming changes HCR will bring our way – both on a business and personal level.
Consultant Patrick Burcher voiced concerns with “Never Events,” hospital acquired conditions and quality of care issues – things we should all consider when it comes to better claims management. It is estimated that medical errors cost the U.S. $17-29 billion a year, plus risk the safety of many patients.
Tuesday was wrapped up with a message from Sally-Ann Polson, Executive VP at Health Cost Control. Sally-Ann is very knowledgeable with end state renal disease and its effect on our bottom line. We learned not only the causes and impact of the disease to the patient, but also the dollar and cents of ESRD to American health care.

Our group outing was an evening of baseball. We enjoyed the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies game from our own private suite!

Wednesday morning was a panel discussion with Tim O’Donnell of AM2 Capital; Ruth Benton, CEO of New West Physicians in Denver; Leo Tokar, SVP with Lockton Companies; and John Crawford, CFO of Renal Advantage. They shared their perspective of managed care, along with current concerns with health care reform.
Wednesday ended with a discussion of . . . health care reform! We heard from Scott Guillemette, Vice President with Ingenix Consulting. With so many changes and so much to learn, the information Scott shared was eagerly absorbed by the crowd in an effort to be a step ahead of changes that are inevitably on their way.
